Does Faith Help Coping With Mental Illness?
When it comes to tackling mental health issues, a lot of coping skills and treatments come under fire as to their effectiveness. While medications top that list, the issue of faith-based recovery programs and treatments are often the next that people want to dismiss. However, that shouldn’t be the case. Faith-based recovery programs allow individuals to work at their own pace and customize the track of recovery through their own belief system. Although many dismiss faith as an effective way to recover, we want to share with you the reality behind faith-based treatments.
Problems Are Equal Opportunists
Everyone has problems. Teens suffer from depression, young adults battle addictions, our elderly suffer from a slew of mental issues due to the aging process. We struggle after having children, relationships can become a battle, some suffer from abuse, our loved ones die. Simply put, life is hard. While there is so much to be grateful for, we still have hard times and rely on many things to help us get through.
Most folks rely on their faith to get them through. We pray for strength, we pray to express gratitude, we attend church to feel closer to our faith and to speak with other like-minded individuals. We even ask others to pray for us. For many, without faith, we wouldn’t know how to cope. Unfortunately, some feel a lack of support in their faith because of mental illness.
With issues of mental illness, it’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole of despair or despression. Our minds ramble off and convince us that we feel like we are abandoned or not supported. Believe it or not, it’s a natural occurrence and one that can be healed. At least until we seek out help and get appropriate treatments. Once we gain control over mental health issues, we are able to open that part of ourselves up again and gain an acceptance of ourselves.
We want people to acknowledge our struggles and yet those same people may not be able to. We are all human and not all of us are in a position to know the right words or even how to help people who are struggling. We are all going through individual struggles which mean that while you struggle, I am struggling and I may not be able to be present for you as I take care of myself.
Furthermore, not all of us understand struggles. A person who has never been exposed to an addiction or been addicted themselves understand that struggle from an outside perspective. However, several treatment centers offer custom treatment programs best suited for patients based on those who have experienced similar struggles.
For those of us who are enduring an internal struggle or seeking help, if you have maintained a strong relationship with your faith, faith-based recovery programs may be the best option for you. Seeking spiritual guidance is one of the best ways to help people cope. Keeping a daily routine of frequent prayers and conversations with church-folk you trust is an excellent way to continue to feel connected and loved. It is the best and most natural route to the healing process one can have.
