Action on Addiction Action on Addiction is a medical research charity that funds research into all forms of substance addiction. We investigate the causes of addiction to alcohol, nicotine and drugs, licit and illicit, and aim to improve treatment and prevention techniques. Brookhaven National Laboratory Brookhaven National Laboratory conducts research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies. Brookhaven also builds and operates major facilities available to university, industrial, and government scientists. GVG, or gamma vinyl-GABA, appears to prevent the biochemical and behavioral effects of nicotine and cocaine in much the same way it prevents an epileptic seizure: by altering the way brain cells talk to one another. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Established as a national philanthropy in 1972 and today it is the largest US foundation devoted to improving the health and health care of all Americans. We concentrate our grantmaking in four areas. to assure that all Americans have access to basic health care at reasonable cost; to improve care and support for people with chronic health conditions; to promote healthy communities and lifestyles; and to reduce the personal, social and economic harm caused by substance abuse - tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs.

• Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, Inc. Pharmacology Research Unit: The Pharmacology Research Unit (PRU) is associated with the Drug Detoxification, Rehabilitation and Aftercare Program of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, Inc. (HAFCI). Dedicated to improving the rates of recovery from drug and alcohol addiction by working to find medications that minimize the physiological hold that substances of abuse have over addicted people, thus enabling more people to undertake the personal and psychological work necessary to achieve and maintain recovery.
